- Deceased parents! Yuri doesn't know where his apparently deadbeat dad is and he doesn't much care, but his mother died in childbirth.
- Murder! Yuri's done some vigilante murdering.
- Depression! Yuri had a pretty dark period between the ages of 18 and 21, where his childhood dream of joining the Imperial Knights and making his home a safer place for everyone pretty much dissolved and left him very much adrift, without even the comfort of his closest friend.
- Self-worth issues! Yuri is a lot subtler about this than many characters, but they're absolutely there.
